Fire Investigations
Fire investigations are carried out to determine how and where a fire started, and why the fire behaved the way that it did. These determinations are essential in protecting the lives and property of our District's residents, businesses, and visitors.
Data that is collected from fire investigations can be used for:
The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District fire investigation team is made up of six certified members. Two of these members are also on the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force. In 2023, the Fire Investigations team investigated 17 fires for our District, and the Kane County Task Force was called out 12 times.

- Improvement of education and awareness for the public
- Implementation of more aggressive fire inspections
- Important input into firefighting operations and tactics
- Modification of regulations for buildings and products
- Prevention of future incidents
